The One Young World 2016 summit begins on the evening of Wednesday 28th September in Ottawa, Canada. As always, this year’s edition will feature presentations and panel discussions involving a host of high-profile figures, including presidents, Nobel Prize winners, well-known business executives and other global leaders.

The opening ceremony will feature keynote speeches from the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Sir Bob Geldof, Professor Muhammad Yunus and Mary Robinson.

Over the course of the following three days until the summit closes on Saturday 1 October, delegates will debate, formulate and share innovative solutions for the most pressing issues facing the world today.

According to the One Young World organisers, the themes and topics to be discussed at each summit are generated by consulting with the community of One Young World Ambassadors and incoming delegates. As such, the summit agenda is intended to be fluid and open to change. However, some of the key themes are already in place; Thursday will feature discussions on understanding and countering extremism; climate justice; sustainable development and gender equality. It will include contributions from Mariel von Schumann of Siemens, BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson and Maajid Nawaz, founder and chairman of Quilliam Foundation.

Friday’s agenda will cover education; global business as a force for good; socio-economic inequality; sustainable conservation; and transformation in Latin America. Speakers include former presidents of Guatemala and Bolivia, economist Dr Dambisa Moyo, BP and Volvo chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg and filmmaker Jon Landau.

Saturday’s lineup of subjects ranges from mental health to ethics; refugees and impactful leadership. World figures lined up to speak include Olympic gold medallist Li Xiaopeng and cricketer Steve Waugh, musician Cher and Lord Michael Hastings, KPMG’s global head of citizenship.

As always, Chartered Accountants Worldwide will be well represented by our delegates who will make connections, debate the issues and contribute to discussions around a range of themes. Our delegates ‘fly the flag’ for young Chartered Accountants by demonstrating how the analytical and problem solving skills of a Chartered Accountant can contribute to improving the world we live in.
