Speakers

Ben Willis, Veale Wasbrough Vizards

Ben is a commercial property lawyer with over 20 years’ experience of working with both mainstream commercial clients and those operating in specialist sectors. He is head of the healthcare team in our Bristol office and has particular expertise in the ownership, development and funding of healthcare property. GP surgery development is an acknowledged specialism and Ben has been involved in over 95 such developments.

Ross Mathieson, NHS 

Ross has worked at NHS Pensions for 23 years and is one of the two Technical Consultancy Team Managers. Ross’s remit includes providing Technical Guides for NHS Pensions internal use and co-ordinating staff training. He still remains involved in Practitioners pensions and works closely with the Dept of Health in respect of changing landscape in the provision of NHS services. He has recently worked closely with NHS England regarding their digitisation programme.

Paula Peppas, NHS

Paula has worked at NHS Pensions for 28 years. Her experience includes time spent as a Service Delivery Manager. She joined the technical team in 2005 – just in time for A-Day. As a senior Technical Consultant she mainly concentrates on overarching legislation, such as Lifetime Allowance and Annual Allowance and is responsible for keeping the Tax Information page on the website up to date. For the past 18 months Paula has been working on several projects for the business, including writing internal technical guides for the 2015 Scheme and being the technical lead on Annual Allowance.

Ian J Crompton, UK Head of Healthcare Banking Services, Lloyds Bank

Ian joined Lloyds Bank in 1976 undertaking a variety of roles within the bank starting with basic branch work such as cashiering, through securities and then ‘Head Office’ roles including training, developing early ‘electronic banking services and working off-shore. In the ‘90s Ian worked in Bristol Regional Office and then into Senior Management in Stroud and Bristol working in early Business Centres. In 2004 he started a small team focused on Healthcare businesses and this developed into HealthCare Banking Services with a nationwide team of over 100 specialists. As Head of HealthCare Banking, Ian oversees the national team and is also responsible for developing sector credit policy, products and propositions and sector insight.

James Hanson, Cushman & Wakefield

James is a Partner and Head of Healthcare Transactions at Cushman & Wakefield. James has 20 years valuation and agency experience, the last 15 of which has been spent specialising in the UK healthcare market. He joined Cushman & Wakefield in November 2016 to lead the transactions capability within the dedicated healthcare business.

Anita Monteith, ICAEW

Anita is Technical Lead & Senior Policy Adviser at the ICAEW and is a regular speaker on tax issues facing small businesses and their advisers. She has been a special adviser on tax to the Government’s Treasury Select Committee since 2011. Anita appears frequently on television and radio discussing tax matters and is a regular on Radio 4’s Moneybox.

Norman Warner

Norman is a Crossbench member of the House of Lords having left the Labour Party in 2015. He was a Minister of State in the Blair government from 2003 -2007 responsible for NHS reform amongst other subjects. He was a member of an independent Commission on the Funding of Care and Support that reported in 2011 to the Coalition government with reform proposals incorporated in the Care Act 2014 but whose implementation has now been delayed until 2020. In April 2014 he was appointed by the Secretary of State for Education as Commissioner for Children’s Services following critical Ofsted reports. He has served 4 years on the Lords Science and Technology Committee; a Lords Select Committee reviewing adoption law; and the Joint Select Committees on the draft Care and Support Bill and the draft Modern Slavery Bill. He was a member of a House of Lords Select Committee on the Sustainability of the NHS and Social Care that reported in April 2017. He was the senior policy adviser to the Home Secretary after the 1997 Election; and set up and chaired the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales from 1999 to 2003. As Kent’s Director of Social Services from 1985 to 1991 he was heavily involved in reform of community care. He has chaired voluntary organisations and the National Council of Voluntary Organisations, as well as working as a management consultant and advising private companies. Earlier in his career he was a senior civil servant in the Department of Health and Social Security.

Linda Mantle

Linda started her NHS career in the Payroll Department at Bromsgrove and Redditch Health Authority in July 1974. She has worked in several NHS Trusts in Worcestershire as a Deputy Payroll Manager and latterly as a Pensions Manager at Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust. She joined Fairway Training in June 2008 and currently heads up the Pensions Team where support and training is provided for numerous clients, dealing directly with Practice/Business Managers as well as staff, regarding all aspects of the NHS Pension Scheme and pension administration. Having accumulated over 43 years of NHS Pensions experience, Linda has an in depth knowledge and understanding of the regulations pertaining to the scheme.
