SUMMARY:Tax & Technology: Opportunity\, Threat or Big Brother?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In this year’s Hardman Lecture\, former ICAEW President Paul Aplin will explore the opportunities and threats technology presents to the tax profession. \nWhat familiar tasks will disappear or change? How far will artificial intelligence impact on advisory work and what risks do we face from increased sharing of real-time data? \nSpeakers\nPaul Aplin: Paul was ICAEW President 2018/19 and is a former Chair of the Tax Faculty. He is a member of CIOT Council\, HMRC’s Administrative Burdens Advisory Board and CFE’s Tax Technology Committee and recently retired as a tax partner with A C Mole & Sons. In 1997 he filed the UK’s first electronic tax return and has maintained a close interest in digitalisation of tax administration\, serving on HMRC’s Carter Programme Board which oversaw the implementation of the2006 Carter Review. \nRaj Shah:  has particularly developed sector expertise in barristers’ chambers\, property and healthcare. Prior to Litchfields\, Raj was a tax manager at Armitage and Norton\, now part of KPMG\, where he qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser. Raj currently chairs the Tax Faculty Board and is a member of ICAEW Council and its Technical Strategy Board.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Book here” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fevents.icaew.com%2Fpd%2F21134%2Ftax-technology-opportunity-threat-or-big-brother|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:PD Leake lecture: Accounting in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]2020 was the year that changed our understanding of the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has\, and continues to disrupt forever we way we live\, work and travel. At the same time\, the latest report from the IPCC confirms the dire state of the impact of climate change: we face a world of increasingly violent and more frequent weather events with shocking consequences for people and economies. Finally\, the science is now telling us clearly that our biodiversity\, the bedrock of life on earth\, is fragile and in crisis. \nThe lecture will provide fresh thinking on how issues of nature\, people and society can be embedded in decision-making. It brings a new perspective by beginning with the socio-ecological issues and asking how we might account for them\, rather than beginning with the existing structures and asking how nature and society might fit into them. This comes at a time when there are rapidly increasing expectations for businesses to demonstrate a commitment to addressing some of the biggest challenges of our age: climate crisis; increasing inequalities; and massive biodiversity loss. \nProfessor Bebbington will examine whether a new way of looking at these issues will mean that they can be addressed more effectively and how the institution of accountancy will need to adapt to do that. \nThe talk will be followed by a practitioner response and a chance to ask questions. \nThe event is in our long-established series of annual PD Leake lectures and is free to view.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Register here” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fevents.icaew.com%2Fpd%2F21276%2Fpd-leake-lecture-accounting-in-the-anthropocene|target:_blank”][vc_column_text]The event is free to attend. Please register by 12:30pm\, Wednesday 19 October 2021.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nSpeaker\nJan Bebbington is Professor of Sustainability at Lancaster University. She is Director of the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business and is a chartered accountant. Find out more[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Tech Faculty Lecture 2019: The impact of ethics on new technologies
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]How can ethics help to build more trust in technologies such as artificial intelligence? This year’s Tech Faculty Lecture will focus on this key question\, and provide a number of different perspectives and answers. The main lecture will be delivered by Professor Luciano Floridi\, Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information at the University of Oxford\, and Director of the Digital Ethics Lab at the Oxford Internet. He will explore the benefits of taking an ethical approach to new technologies\, as well as some of the key challenges in implementation. How can businesses translate high level ethical principles into real world situations ? What practical tools are available to help? And to what extent is regulation needed to support or drive change? \nRachel Coldicutt\, CEO of responsible technology think tank Doteveryone\, will give a formal response to the lecture\, and provide further perspective on the topic. \nThis year’s lecture will also mark the recent launch of ICAEW’s report on ‘New technologies\, ethics and accountability’\, and report author Kirstin Gillon will consider the role of the accountancy profession in this area. \nThe event brings together accounting and finance practitioners\, technology specialists\, academics\, not-for-profit\, think tank and government stakeholders keen to explore and discuss issues surrounding technology and its impact on business and society. \nThe event is free to attend and will conclude with networking drinks. \nHow to attend\nThis is a livestream event and people can log in and view online.  To find out more\, click here. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
