SUMMARY:Chartered Accountants and achieving the UN Global Goals
DESCRIPTION:What role can Chartered Accountants play in tackling the UN’s global goals to end extreme poverty\, inequality and climate change by 2030? \nOn Monday 22 May\, Chartered Accountants Worldwide will host a discussion about how the profession can contribute to achieving the United Nations’ 17 global goals for sustainable development. \nThe invitation-only event at Chartered Accountants’ Hall in London will feature a select number of members from CAW’s 11 bodies\, giving their views on what the goal of the profession should be in helping the businesses they work for to embed those goals in their own objectives. They will also discuss how to reach more accountants with the message. \nThe role for the accountancy profession comes from its history in serving the public interest by creating public goods in the form of common bases of measurement\, reporting and assurance. \nAs countries measure progress on the UN global goals statistically\, and business measures progress using accounting tools\, the accountancy profession will have a substantial role in aligning these systems of measurement. \nIn September 2015\, the 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly formally adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This included 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development – including ending poverty\, fighting inequality and tackling climate change – with 169 associated targets and the principle that no one will be left behind. \nThere are videos\, graphics and other materials along with more information about the UN Global Goals at the website www.globalgoals.org. The UN actively encourages sharing in order to raise awareness of its global goals and\, ultimately\, to achieve them. \nJoin the conversation\, promote the goals\, share your opinions and follow discussions by commenting and tweeting us via the hashtag #GlobalGoals. \nThis is the fourth in a series of global events that CAW has hosted in major international markets over 2016-17. Under the title of “Conversations around the World”\, these events bring together a select group of CEOs\, CFOs\, senior representatives and young rising stars across business and practice to discuss key issues facing business leaders. \nThere is a members networking reception taking place after the workshop. There will be a videographer who will invite participants to talk on camera about key points and thoughts from the debate. \n
