SUMMARY:Difference Makers Discuss - Kingsley Aikins\, Good work doesn't speak for itself... But you can!
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nHave you ever been told to keep your head down\, work hard\, and let your good work speak for itself? It sounds like solid advice. It’s also\, according to Kingsley Aikins\, pretty much the worst career guidance you can get. \nIn this episode of Difference Makers Discuss\, host Sinéad Donovan sits down with Kingsley Aikins\, author of Networking Matters (published by Chartered Accountants Ireland)\, founder of the iconic Lansdowne Club in Sydney\, and the man who spent 21 years building one of the world’s great philanthropic networks for Ireland. The conversation is warm\, honest\, and packed with practical wisdom that will make you rethink how you approach your career and your connections. \nFrom Rugby Pitches to the Waldorf Astoria\nKingsley’s story is a masterclass in the unexpected power of relationships. From playing rugby for Leinster to landing in Sydney not knowing a single soul\, to running a dinner for 12 people that became the largest Irish business network in any city in the world — his journey is proof that putting yourself out there\, even imperfectly\, changes everything. \nHe even wrote a cold letter to Tony O’Reilly — one of Ireland’s most powerful business figures at the time — and was invited to lunch. That lunch turned into a 21-year career running the Ireland Funds\, raising hundreds of millions of dollars for projects across the island of Ireland. Not bad for ‘just’ networking. \nKey Takeaways from the Episode\n\nGood work doesn’t speak. People do.\nGood work doesn’t speak – other people speak. If nobody knows how you’re contributing to your organisation or your profession\, they move on to someone else. That’s not pessimism – it’s just how the world works.\nThe two most important words in your career: Other People.\nYou’ll never get a job unless other people agree to it. You’ll never win a client unless other people agree to it. Your career is fundamentally a relationship business and yet schools and colleges almost never teach us how to nurture those relationships.\nNetworking is about giving\, not getting.\nApproaching networking as a transaction – What can I get? – is obvious and off-putting. The real approach is simpler: How can I help?\nIntroverts can be better networkers than extroverts.\nThis one surprises people every time. But Kingsley’s argument is compelling: introverts ask better questions\, listen more genuinely\, and engage with decency and authenticity.\nHard skills get you on the ladder. Soft skills get you up it.\nThis is a theme that will resonate with anyone in the profession. Technical skills are essential – they get you in the door. But the things that drive careers forward: listening\, curiosity\, communication\, resilience\, humour – these are harder to quantify and almost never formally taught.\nYou can make your own luck.\nLuck and serendipity don’t happen sitting at your desk. They happen when you’re in motion\, when you talk to strangers\, when you put your talents on display.\n\nWhy Watch This Episode?\nWhether you’ve always been uncomfortable at networking events\, or you’ve been doing it for years on autopilot\, this conversation with Kingsley Aikins will give you a completely fresh way of thinking about it. It’s funny\, it’s grounded in real experience\, and it’s full of genuinely actionable ideas. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nReserve your spot – It’s free\n[/vc_column_text]\n\n \n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n \n NameThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n I am a*\n \n Chartered Accountant Member\n \n \n Chartered Accountant student/trainee\n \n \n OYW Ambassador\n \n \n None of the above\n Select Your Chartered Accountancy Institute*Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ)Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI)Chartered Institute of Accountants in Malawi (ICAM)Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountants (IAI)Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA)The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (CA Namibia)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ)The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA)OtherOther - Please name your institute*Privacy Policy*\n \n I accept that the data I provide is used according to Chartered Accountants Worldwide Privacy Policy\n Newsletter\n \n I would like to receive the Chartered Accountants Worldwide email newsletter.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Difference Makers Discuss - Aster Thackery\, What If your REAL skill is connecting people?
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nWhat does a fourth-generation New Zealander\, raised in a small city\, with a Singaporean-Chinese mum\, a law degree\, a Chartered Accountancy qualification\, and an Irish husband have in common with the Italian government\, a 2\,000-person community in Greenwich\, and a global mission to attract foreign investment? \nMeet Aster Thackery. In this episode of Difference Makers Discuss\, host Sinéad Donovan sits down with one of the most refreshingly non-linear careers you’ll encounter in our profession. Aster is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand\, currently serving as Chair of the CA ANZ UK Regional Council — and by day\, she works with the Italian Trade Agency\, helping international businesses understand the investment landscape in Italy. Oh\, and she’s also built one of the most vibrant parent communities in southeast London. Essentially from scratch. \nThe Chartered Accountancy Qualification That Opened Every Door\nAster studied both law and accounting\, but it was the Chartered Accountancy qualification that made all the difference when she arrived in London on a working visa. Recruiters\, employers\, boardrooms — the accounting credential was the one that got her the interviews and\, ultimately\, the opportunities. It led her to a role as lead finance specialist with what was then UK Trade and Investment\, sending her around the world to talk to businesses about the UK’s investment landscape. From there\, a similar role — but this time for Italy. \nIt’s a reminder that a Chartered Accountancy qualification doesn’t just open the door to a career in accountancy. It opens doors\, full stop. \nKey Takeaways from the Episode\n\nCultural awareness is a genuine professional advantage.\nAster recommends The Culture Map by Erin Meyer as essential reading for anyone working internationally\, noting it helped her understand the significant difference between how New Zealanders (direct\, egalitarian) and Italians (hierarchical\, nuanced) operate in professional settings. A small awareness shift that made a big difference.\nYour Chartered Accountant gives you confidence in rooms that feel daunting.\nWalking into a conference room full of senior business leaders as a young woman? That can feel like a lot. But the Chartered Accountancy qualification acts as a kind of professional anchor – a visible signal of credibility.\nCommunity is one of the most powerful things you can build.\nFive years ago\, Aster moved to Greenwich\, knew nobody\, and was pregnant with her second child. She started a small coffee meetup for local parents. That meetup now has over 2\,000 active members. It’s incorporated as a social enterprise\, and has empowered other women in the community to launch their own initiatives. What started as a simple human impulse — I don’t know anyone\, let me find some people — became something much more substantial. A reminder that the most meaningful things often don’t begin with a grand plan.\nPeople want a village — but they don’t want to be a villager.\nMany people lament the loss of community while simultaneously being unwilling to contribute to building one. Her push-back is gentle but firm: if you want the village\, you have to show up for it.\nDone is better than perfect.\nAster credits much of her ability to juggle a demanding international career\, a voluntary leadership role with CA ANZ\, and a thriving community project (alongside being a mum of two) to one simple mindset shift: knowing when good enough is good enough.\nNever drop your other interests — they all compound.\nEach year\, Aster deliberately learns something completely unrelated to her professional field. A pottery class. A certified advisory board chair course. Her reason: it keeps her brain thinking in different ways\, and you never know when those lateral skills will become relevant.\nSelf-reflection is where it all starts.\nUnderstanding who you are\, what your values are\, and what direction of travel makes sense for you.\n\nWhy Watch This Episode?\nThis is a conversation about what it looks like when you allow your career to be genuinely\, authentically yours\, even when that looks nothing like the path people expected you to take. Aster is funny\, self-aware\, and wonderfully honest about the bits she found hard: the cultural hiccups\, the shift from independent free spirit to co-parenting life\, the slow realisation that connecting people might actually be her greatest skill. \nFor anyone who has ever wondered whether a Chartered Accountancy qualification can support a career that doesn’t look like a traditional one\, this episode is your answer. It absolutely can. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nReserve your spot – It’s free\n[/vc_column_text]\n \n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n \n FacebookThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n I am a*\n \n Chartered Accountant Member\n \n \n Chartered Accountant student/trainee\n \n \n OYW Ambassador\n \n \n None of the above\n Select Your Chartered Accountancy Institute*Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ)Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI)Chartered Institute of Accountants in Malawi (ICAM)Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountants (IAI)Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA)The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (CA Namibia)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ)The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA)OtherOther - Please name your institute*Privacy Policy*\n \n I accept that the data I provide is used according to Chartered Accountants Worldwide Privacy Policy\n Newsletter\n \n I would like to receive the Chartered Accountants Worldwide email newsletter.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Difference Makers Discuss - Liswaniso Namatama\, Auditing Is a Human Business
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nLiswaniso Namatama CA (ZICA) on professional judgment\, community impact\, and why human skills will always matter in audit.\nIn an era when AI and automation are transforming finance\, what is the irreplaceable value that human professionals bring to the auditing process? Liswaniso Namatama has a compelling answer — and it goes to the heart of what good auditing really is. \nIn this episode of Difference Makers Discuss\, Liswaniso joins host Sinéad Donovan to explore what audit looks like when it’s done well: as a tool not just for assurance\, but for helping organisations understand themselves and improve how they work. He argues that no amount of automation can replace the judgment\, empathy\, and contextual understanding that skilled human auditors bring to the table. \nSpeaker Bio\nLiswaniso Namatama is a Chartered Accountant (ZICA) and Assistant Manager at ACTCO Accountants in Lusaka\, Zambia. SUMMARY:Difference Makers Discuss - Manuel Rodrigues\, Building a Micro-Economy: How One Chartered Accountant Is Transforming Rural Mozambique
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nManuel Rodrigues CA(SA) on social enterprise\, agriculture\, and the power of an integrated vision.\nWhat if accountancy could help feed a nation? For Manuel Rodrigues CA(SA)\, it’s not a hypothetical — it’s his daily reality. \nManuel is the driving force behind EDP Mozambique\, a social enterprise operating in the Tete province that works with over 55\,000 maize farmers and 14\,000 soya farmers. Through a vertically integrated model that includes a commercial hatchery\, 11 retail stores\, and a distribution network\, EDP has created what Manuel describes as a ‘micro-economy flywheel’ — where each part of the system strengthens the others\, building resilience and prosperity from the ground up. \nIn this episode of Difference Makers Discuss\, Manuel joins host Sinead Donovan to share how his Chartered Accountancy training shaped his approach to building complex\, sustainable systems — and why he believes the African continent holds extraordinary opportunity for purpose-driven professionals. A recipient of Psyche’s prestigious Top 35 Under 35 award\, Manuel is one of the most compelling young business leaders working in Africa today. \nSpeaker Bio\nManuel Rodrigues is a Chartered Accountant (South Africa) and the co-founder and driving force behind EDP Mozambique\, a social enterprise supporting over 69\,000 smallholder farmers in the Tete province of Mozambique. Manuel was named in Psyche’s Top 35 Under 35. \nWhat You Will Learn\n\nHow EDP Mozambique’s ‘micro-economy flywheel’ model works — and why it’s so powerful\nThe role of Chartered Accountancy skills in building and scaling a social enterprise\nWhat it takes to operate in frontier markets\, and the rewards of doing so\nManuel’s vision for the future: doubling the retail network and expanding production\nWhy Africa’s agricultural sector offers real opportunity for finance professionals\n\nReserve your spot – It’s free\n[/vc_column_text]\n \n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n \n PhoneThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n I am a*\n \n Chartered Accountant Member\n \n \n Chartered Accountant student/trainee\n \n \n OYW Ambassador\n \n \n None of the above\n Select Your Chartered Accountancy Institute*Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ)Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI)Chartered Institute of Accountants in Malawi (ICAM)Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountants (IAI)Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA)The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (CA Namibia)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka)The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ)The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA)OtherOther - Please name your institute*Privacy Policy*\n \n I accept that the data I provide is used according to Chartered Accountants Worldwide Privacy Policy\n Newsletter\n \n I would like to receive the Chartered Accountants Worldwide email newsletter.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Difference Makers Discuss - Caitriona Jennings\, From PwC to World Records
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nCaitriona Jennings FCA CPA on building a remarkable career — and breaking records along the way.\nWhat do tax advisory\, aviation finance\, and 100-mile ultra-marathons have in common? For Caitriona Jennings FCA CPA\, they’re all chapters in the same extraordinary story. \nCaitriona began her career at PwC before moving into aviation leasing\, where she built expertise at the trading desk of one of the world’s most dynamic asset classes. Away from the office\, she has represented Ireland on the world stage — competing in the marathon at the 2012 London Olympics\, and most recently setting a world record in the 100-mile ultra-marathon in November 2025 with a time of 12:37:04. \nIn this episode of Difference Makers Discuss\, Caitriona reflects on what connects high-performance sport and high-performance finance: the ability to embrace setbacks\, build resilience\, and keep going when the finish line feels impossibly far away. SUMMARY:Difference Makers Discuss - Mark Scully\, navigating neurodiversity in professional services
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nNavigating Neurodiversity in Professional Services: A Conversation with Mark Scully\nWhat does it take to thrive in professional services when your brain works differently? In this powerful episode of our Difference Makers Discuss series\, Sinead Donovan (past president of Chartered Accountants Ireland) sits down with Mark Scully\, founder of Braver and member of Chartered Accountants Ireland\, for an honest conversation about neurodiversity\, mental health\, and building truly inclusive workplaces. \nMark’s Story: From Hidden Struggles to Helping Others\nWhen Mark Scully joined KPMG’s tax graduate program in 2011\, his CV told the story of academic excellence: law degree\, barrister qualification\, and a bright future ahead. What it didn’t show were the silent battles he was fighting every single day. \nMark trained at a Big Four firm\, where he excelled academically but struggled with the unwritten rules of workplace culture. “I was looking around at my colleagues thinking\, ‘Why can’t I just do that?'” he recalls. His coping mechanism—saying yes to everything and working longer hours—led to burnout by 2013. \nIn 2021\, Mark received an autism diagnosis that transformed his understanding of himself and his career. The combination of diagnosis and coaching helped him develop sustainable working practices\, improve his performance\, and ultimately leave KPMG as a tax director to found Braver—a coaching and consulting firm specializing in neurodiversity. \nWhat You’ll Learn in This Session\nThe Reality of Neurodiversity in Professional Services \nMark shares candidly about: \n\nThe hidden challenges many professionals face in navigating workplace culture\nWhy academic success doesn’t always translate to workplace comfort\nThe three categories of neurodivergent people in every workplace\nHow mental health and neurodiversity are inextricably linked\n\nTransforming Management Approaches \nDiscover why traditional process-focused management needs to evolve: \n\nMoving from “this is how we’ve always done it” to outcome-focused flexibility\nWhy the transition to manager is so critical (and often poorly supported)\nHow to approach workplace challenges with compassion rather than blame\nTraining managers to work effectively with people who think differently\n\nCreating Neuroinclusive Workplaces \nMark explains that building inclusive environments isn’t about checklists—it’s about fundamental culture change: \n\nWhy there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach to neurodiversity\nHow accommodations for neurodivergent employees benefit everyone\nThe importance of normalizing conversations about different working styles\nWhy person-centered\, flexible management improves outcomes across the board\n\nA Call to Leaders \nOne of the most powerful moments in this conversation addresses senior professionals who may be neurodivergent but haven’t spoken publicly about it. Mark shares how seeing representation changed his own journey and why visibility from leaders matters so profoundly. \nWhy This Matters to You\nWhether you’re: \n\nA professional wondering if you might be neurodivergent\nA manager looking to better support your team\nAn HR or L&D leader building inclusive workplace strategies\nA firm leader wanting to attract and retain diverse talent\n\nThis conversation offers practical insights and a compassionate framework for creating workplaces where everyone can thrive. \nKey Takeaways\nBy attending this webinar\, you’ll gain: \n✓ A deeper understanding of neurodiversity beyond stereotypes\n✓ Practical strategies for flexible\, person-centered management\n✓ Insights into the link between mental health and neurodiversity\n✓ Confidence to start conversations about different working styles in your organization\n✓ Real-world examples of how small changes can dramatically improve performance\n✓ Inspiration from Mark’s journey from struggling professional to successful entrepreneur \nAbout the Speakers\nMark Scully is founder of Braver\, a coaching and consulting firm specializing in neurodiversity.
