In the latest episode of Difference Makers Discuss, we unlock the keys to resilience and well-being in the Chartered Accountancy profession as we reveal the results of a groundbreaking global report in conjunction with Brad Hook and Declan Scott of the Resilience Institute.
Global well-being report on the state of the Chartered Accountancy profession
This report examines the state of resilience and well-being within the Chartered Accountancy profession. While Chartered Accountants play a critical role in safeguarding financial integrity, their work often entails significant stress and complexity.
The episode is hosted by Dee France , Wellbeing and Support Lead at Chartered Accountants Ireland & Chair of the Chartered Accountants Worldwide wellbeing taskforce.
As the workplace landscape continues to evolve, understanding the dynamics of mental health and resilience has never been more critical for today’s Accountancy professionals. With nearly 700 Chartered Accountants surveyed globally, the report offers valuable insights into the strengths and challenges of the profession, along with actionable recommendations for improving overall well-being.
The panel discusses the core findings of the report: That there are the remarkable strengths possessed by Chartered Accountants: curiosity, altruism, and creativity. These traits are not just admirable; they play a substantial role in fostering resilience and professional success. Curiosity drives Chartered Accountants to embrace challenges head-on, enhancing their problem-solving abilities and adaptability. Altruism cultivates trust and connection within client relationships, allowing accountants to thrive while contributing positively to their clients’ businesses. Creativity, often overlooked in the profession, enables accountants to find innovative solutions to complex problems—essential skills in today’s fast-paced environment.
The conversation also focuses on the significant challenges that the report highlights, particularly multitasking, hyper-vigilance, and poor sleep quality. Multitasking, often perceived as a necessary skill, can lead to cognitive overload, ultimately draining mental resources. Surprisingly, studies indicate multitasking may result in losing as much as 80% of effective time due to continuous context switching. Therefore, embracing a practice known as monotasking—focusing on one task at a time—can significantly enhance productivity and overall well-being.
Hyper-vigilance is another area of concern. Chartered Accountants often find themselves in a state of constant alertness, which can negatively impact both their cognitive and emotional states. This is compounded by the pervasive issue of sleep deprivation. As sleep quality deteriorates, accountants may struggle with memory consolidation and creative thinking—essential elements for effective problem-solving in their roles.
To counteract these challenges, the speakers offer practical strategies rooted in cognitive behavioural techniques (CBT). CBT encourages individuals to recognise the relationship between their thoughts, emotions, and actions. By developing cognitive flexibility, accountants can shift negative thought patterns, allowing them to respond more effectively to stressors. Journaling, mindfulness, and structured reflection are invaluable CBT tools that can help accountants manage their worries and foster a more constructive mindset.
Brad and Declan also emphasise the importance of sleep, labelling it a cornerstone of resilience. Quality sleep is vital for emotional regulation and cognitive performance. Implementing sleep training and establishing nighttime boundaries can transform sleep hygiene, ensuring accountants wake feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.
The guest speakers paint resilience training as a game-changer for long-term well-being. It equips professionals with the necessary skills to navigate life’s uncertainty while promoting their physical, emotional, and social fitness. The training approach is holistic and evidence-based, ensuring that professional growth is balanced with optimal well-being.
The discussion concludes with the affirmation that future-proofing the profession by integrating resilience into workplace cultures is essential to attract and retain young talent. Younger professionals increasingly seek meaningful roles that prioritize well-being, fulfilment, and opportunities for growth. By embracing and demonstrating a commitment to resilience, firms can inspire the next generation and cultivate a positive and healthy professional environment.
