Amna’s story – how one member found support from her institute

This week (May 9th -13th) is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK and EU. May is also mental health awareness month in the United States. It’s a time to reflect on why your mental health and wellbeing are of utmost importance – not just in the workplace, but at home too.
This year’s theme focuses on loneliness, something that affects millions of people globally each year – across all age ranges – and is a key driver for poor mental health. Loneliness was brought into sharp focus during the pandemic.
We wanted to share a personal story from Amna, one of our Chartered Accountants Ireland members about how the Thrive team at Chartered Accountants Ireland, helped her combat her mental health crisis and her loneliness.
“In some way or other, the pandemic has impacted everyone’s life. I am no different. During the first major lockdown, I went through a personal crisis (uncontrollable situations) and at the same time, CAP2 exams were due. I thought about deferring the exams because of my trainee contract, a family crisis and the exams all converging at once. I felt like I couldn’t do it.
During that time, I reached out to the Thrive team. My main concern was I wanted to get the exams done. The motivation and support provided by them during CAP2 exams is unexplainable and as a result I didn’t defer my exams and I passed CAP2.
After the CAP2 exams, my mental health was not at its best. I was not able to access therapy due to high demand. Again, I reached out to the Thrive team, my situation and they provided 24/7 online support for mental health which helped me a lot during the dark days.
Unfortunately, mental health cannot be healed by medicine or goes away overnight, but over time, we learn to manage it. The team at Thrive have played a great role in my life by listening to me when I wanted to be heard and advising me how to manage my well-being during difficult times especially FAE and as a result, I passed my FAE exams last year.
I am not someone who will ask for help but, at some stage we all need help and when we accept it, that is when we do ourselves a favour.
I feel mental health is not talked about as much compared with other illnesses because people often think it is a weakness. I disagree. If I hadn’t reached a crisis point in my life and learned how to deal with certain situations, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I am a much stronger person than I was yesterday.”
