CA ANZ launches Sustainability Playbook

Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) have released its Sustainability Playbook, a practical guide designed to help accounting and finance professionals build the skills and confidence needed to navigate one of the most significant transformations in corporate reporting in decades.
From 1 January 2025, Australia introduced mandatory climate-related disclosures for large entities, with similar requirements already in place in New Zealand. These changes mark a new era for the profession, where sustainability is no longer a niche topic but a core capability.
“Accountants are uniquely positioned to lead the way through reporting, assurance, strategy and governance. Sustainability is embedded in our education model alongside taxation and assurance, and this playbook provides practical steps to help members integrate sustainability into everyday decision-making.”
What’s inside the Sustainability Playbook?
The Sustainability Playbook gives accounting and finance professionals practical guidance to build the sustainability capability they need now and for the future. Inside, you’ll find:
- Why sustainability matters, and how accountants are taking a leading role.
- Actionable strategies to build capability, structure finance teams, and prepare for sustainable accounting and audit practices.
- Learning opportunities and resources to support ongoing capability building.
- The playbook also spotlights real-world examples of sustainability in action, showing how accountants are helping organisations manage climate risk, unlock strategic opportunities and create long-term value.
Looking ahead
More than 90% of CFOs globally believe ESG issues will be a major focus for their organisation over the next five years. Investors, regulators and consumers increasingly expect businesses to demonstrate sustainability credentials, and accountants are at the forefront of this shift – leading the integration of sustainability into planning, reporting, governance and strategic decision-making.
