Webcast # 6: Impact of Technology

Overview

In this 6th webcast of our series we will focus on the impact of technology. As we get used to working remotely, which we might become the norm for the foreseeable future, we need to consider the importance of cyber and mobile security. How do we mitigate the risks of malware and phishing attacks? We will also listen to business owners who have fully remote businesses. We will have an interactive discussion on the challenges, the technologies that they use, how they manage employees remotely, how they keep everyone engaged and most importantly they will share their lessons and practical strategies on how other businesses can run a successful remote office.

Programme

Session 1 (08h00 – 08h45)

Interactive discussion with businesses that have been running remote offices sharing lessons, tips, tools and strategies to enable other businesses to follow this blue-print.

Session 2 (08h45 – 09h30)

Cyber risks and data security implications of remote work

Series Overview

Crises inadvertently create opportunity. Challenges and crises have the potential to ignite our greatest ideas, creative thoughts and leadership decisions as it forces us outside the norm. It is said that the best things lie just beyond our comfort zones.

It is against a backdrop of a global crisis as well as the recent downgrade by Moody’s, confirming the country’s sub-investment status and the accompanying dire economic prospects facing the country, as well as the impact of COVID-19 and the lockdown, it is easy to become despondent and fearful.

We’d like to encourage you during this time of uncertainty to take care of yourself and your family. But not only that, consider the impact of your actions on those around you. Fighting this pandemic and finding our new normal in the midst of uncertainty is not only necessary, but also our national duty.

Therefore, SAICA wants to encourage you, our members, in these unsettling and unprecedented times.  To help address the challenges faced by many, SAICA will be hosting a complimentary virtual leadership series that will focus on various elements affecting individuals, businesses and the profession as a whole.

Willem Haarhoff, co-founder DoughGetters Accounting™

“Willem loves his family, interacting with people and doing beautiful digital business. He believes that things should be simple and straightforward and therefore he likes to shoot from the hip. He sees himself as somewhat of a mountain goat as he loves spending time at altitude “depreciating” his Altra trail running shoes and solving complex problems. Willem qualified as a Chartered Accountant a few months after the whole world had thought that the computers will switch off the lights.

Fortunately, this never happened and so he was able to complete 20 rewarding years at one of the Big 4 Accounting firms. He spent the last 11 of those 20 years as an expatriate in Lagos, Nigeria gaining invaluable experience and knowledge about how to develop, drive and execute business strategy. During this time he was supported by his valuable team of approximately 100 accounting professionals in providing high quality assurance services to numerous subsidiaries of large listed multinational companies. Willem returned to South Africa in 2014 doing some freelance work and in 2016 he co-founded DoughGetters Accounting™ with his current partner, Murray Barnetson, a fully remote office. Together they seek to play a leading role in shaping the future of accounting in South Africa and the rest of the world.”
