Eastern Region – Webcast topic 1: Creative escapes: Using art, music, and micro-adventures for mental wellness

This webcast will explore the intersection of creativity and adventure as powerful tools for boosting mental health. We’ll examine how engaging in creative activities like painting, writing, or music can serve as a therapeutic outlet for emotional expression and stress relief. Additionally, we’ll introduce the concept of “micro-adventures”—short, spontaneous local trips designed to break routine, refresh the mind, and promote mental resilience. Experts in art therapy, music therapy, and outdoor exploration will provide practical tips for integrating creativity and micro-adventures into daily life to help reduce anxiety, alleviate burnout, and foster emotional wellness.

Riaan Manser

Adventurer, author and speaker

Riaan Manser is a world-renowned explorer boasting many a world record. His arguably most famous journey was that of circumnavigating the entire continent of Africa by bicycle. 2 years 2 months covering over 38 000km and passing through 34 countries of Africa. Some countries ranked as the most dangerous on planet earth. Captured by rebel soldiers in Liberia to been held captive by Al Qaeda in Algeria.

Circumnavigating Madagascar in a kayak and similarly around Iceland in a double Kayak added two more world firsts to his name. But this wasn’t enough. He decided to rope his then girlfriend into his world. Attempting to row from Africa to North America. The first human to attempt and successfully complete this continent-to-continent ocean row. Manser went on to row more oceans and in total has covered more than 22 000km on open ocean.

He is in a league of his own.

Driven by a lifelong dream, she embarked on a solo journey through Africa in her Land Rover Defender, balancing work with exploration while making her way to Tanzania to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. Along the way, she faced challenges, formed unexpected connections, and found strength in community. Tiffany believes that adventure isn’t about expertise, it’s about connection, collaboration, and courage. She inspires others to step beyond routine, embrace creativity and freedom, and reconnect with nature and one other. For many years, Alexa has been actively involved in delivering mental health awareness talks and workshops, through her ongoing collaboration with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG). Driven by the belief that knowledge is a powerful tool for healing, Alexa strives to increase public understanding of mental health issues. Her mission is to empower individuals on their path to wellness by breaking down stigma, encouraging open dialogue, and equipping people with the tools and insights they need to thrive.”
