CAW Network USA hosted this exciting online event focusing on discussing the impact on the global economy of, and on accountants living in, an Era of Energy Disruption. Our first session (presentation) ran for about 45 minutes. We followed this by introducing our moderator and additional panelist, who joined Gerard for the second session (panel discussion) of about 45 minutes, which also included any audience Q&A. The second session focused on tying back the initial presentation to its impact on the accounting profession. Total time including introduction and polls 90 minutes.
This presentation covered:
- Impact of Technology and AI
- Energy Security
- Geopolitics
This was followed by a panel discussion of the key items and priorities arising.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this session, attendees achieved the following objectives:
- Understood how technology and AI are accelerating change. While the major step change is AI, improvements in other technologies including solar, batteries, power electronics are also forcing change.
- Learned how Energy Security is moving from dependence on seaborne transport and on countries such as Saudi Arabia which have required us over the last 75 years to militarily defend to a world of locally produced electricity where the security concerns are very different. Making sure we have 24/7 electricity is a must given the digital societies we live in and requires investments to ensure the system is resilient against risks such as climate (forest fires, floods, storms), as well as physical and cyber attacks. Where there is overlap and inconsistency and how the accounting profession has an opportunity to become the trusted advisor and assessor of compliance.
- Became aware of how Geopolitics is changing, including how energy and security have always been at the heart of all conflicts. How this impacts value chains and pricing.
