Working towards a better future: One Young World 2016 Breakout Session

Chartered Accountants Worldwide at One Young World

As part of One Young World 2016, Chartered Accountants Worldwide is hosting a breakout session on the UN sustainable development goals. Published in September 2015, this is a list of 17 targets to be achieved by 2030, including: no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation and responsible consumption.

The One Young World 2016 summit begins on the evening of Wednesday 28th September in Ottawa, Canada, and runs until Saturday 1 October. This year’s edition features presentations and panel discussions involving a host of high-profile guests, including former presidents, Nobel Prize winners, figures from the world of business, sport and entertainment, along with many other global leaders.

In the build up to the summit, all attending delegates had the opportunity to sign up to CAW’s interactive session. This is now fully booked and will be attended by close to 60 people from all over the world. Delegates attending One Young World are between 18 and 30 years old,who have demonstrated leadership ability and a commitment to effecting positive change.

At the session, delegates will take part in an interactive workshop to discuss how to achieve the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and establish practical plan of action, that every one of us could put in place

Participants will divide into pairs or threes, picking one of the 17 goals that resonates with them personally and will then move the discussion into the professional context by discussing how those goals relate to each other in a broader system. The group will then decide on what action each delegate can take both personally and collectively to make the goals real.

The speakers leading the session are Alan Horn, ICAS Chartered Accountant and Chairman of the board of Rogers Communications, and Martin Martinoff, Sustainability Manager, who leads the audit futures thought leadership programme of ICAEW.

According to the summit organisers, many of the delegates taking part in this year’s summit and in previous events have already had an impact in their home countries on a range of issues, such as the role of business in society, transparency in business and government, the impact of climate change, global health and hunger relief.
