Overview
Join us as we dive into decision making to identify and share the most effective and usable decision-making techniques. Highly effective but overly complex processes will be omitted. The sessions are intended for immediate use by a wide range of professionals. While these sessions will build on each other, they can nevertheless be experienced as individual sessions, and will not necessitate attendance at all four. However, for maximum benefit participants should attend all.

Topics
Session One: Decision making for complicated environments.
Not everything has changed, and where things haven’t changed fundamentally, all we need is better and more appropriate decision-making approaches participants will be exposed to in this session.
Session Two: Decision making for complex environments.
Complex is not simply more complicated – it is completely different. Here small changes have outsized consequences. In this session we will focus on making decisions where you have no real control over the majority of circumstances. Despite this you have to decide with few aspects you know for sure, many you don’t know for sure, and as many (probably) that you don’t know you don’t know.
Session Three: Decision making for complex environments where you have very little direct control on those who will make most of the decisions.
This is a real problem faced by many. However, organization where the stakes are life and death have developed approaches that are remarkably simple. The solution is ‘simplicity on the other side of complexity’, and it can be learned by anyone.
Session Four: A practical way to significantly improve your own decisions.
When decision making is focused only on the quality of the outcome, it fudges a significant fact. Results are the function of good decision making and luck. You can only control one of these – good decision making.
With executives and senior managers paid primarily to make decisions, it is surprising how little personal effort gets put into becoming a superb decision maker. This method with increase you learning curve significantly.
Speaker
Ian Mann is the founder of Gateways Business Consultant, a 23-year-old consultancy that is home to former main board directors of listed companies and people with exceptional business experience at executive levels. Ian is a seasoned strategist who has worked with medium sized organizations and SBUs in large ones, across 14 countries. He holds an M.A. (Cum Laude) and was one of 10 recipients internationally of a 3-year ‘Jerusalem Fellowship’.
Ian is the author of 3 books: ‘Managing with Intent’ (Implementation of Strategy); ‘Strategy that Works’ (Formulation of Strategy in Medium sized organizations); and ‘The Executive Update’ (A summary of the most significant business ideas over the preceding 4 years). He has reviewed over 650 business books in his weekly columns in the Sunday Times, and currently in Fin24. Ian is a director of five companies: Gateways Business Consultants; Gateways Tracing Services; Choice Decisions; OVO Incubators and Khulisa Social Solutions.
