About the event

The world’s climate conversations are ramping up towards the critical COP26 Climate meeting taking place in November 2021. Whilst the coronavirus pandemic has paused many key climate initiatives it has not dampened the ambitions or lessened the severity of the climate crisis the world faces. The challenges presented by the climate crisis are often acutely local in focus, but the leadership required to tackle them is global. How can young leaders in business and finance help connect the two?

In this session we will hear from Anne-Marie Trevelyan an ICAEW Chartered Accountant, Member of the UK Parliament and Champion on Adaptation and Resilience for the COP26 Presidency. She will outline the global ambition and action required to support countries on the frontline of climate change to adapt to its impacts and build resilience.

The conversation will then focus on how young leaders in business and finance can help connect the local and global when it comes to climate change.

Hosts:

  • Jolyon Layard Horsfall, CEO TotemFi, CFO Happy Space UK, Co-Chair of FinBiz2030 Task Force
  • Emma Bell, Founder of Beyond the Balance and Manifesto Maker, Co-Chair of FinBiz2030 Task Force

She has previously served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Defence. As an MP, she has campaigned with colleagues for greater autism awareness and has focused on the Armed Forces Covenant.

Angelique Pouponneau

She is a lawyer (Seychelles and UK,) and she holds an LLM in Environmental law specializing in the law of the sea and natural resources law. She is also a trained climate change negotiator under the AOSIS Climate Change Fellowship Programme at the United Nations.

Angelique has worked in different countries in the Caribbean, Pacific and the Indian Ocean on a wide-range of projects relating sustainable fisheries, sustainable management of marine biodiversity within and beyond national jurisdiction, and climate change – in particular, climate adaptation, loss and damage and climate finance. Further, she served as a legal expert of the African Group of the Sixth Committee in works of oceans and law of the sea at the United Nations.

Moreover, Angelique has experience working with civil society as a co-founder for a not-for-profit organization in Seychelles, and a Board member of a Commonwealth-wide youth-led organization.

Jessica Bingham

She holds a BSc in Economics from The University of Sheffield and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce, whose notable fellows include David Attenborough and Adam Smith.

Her goal has always been to be at the forefront of social change. At present this means supporting innovation and accountability within the public sector and the wider accountancy profession.

Ravi Abeywardana

Sustainability may be one of the biggest buzzwords across business but for Ravi Abeywardana (ACA), Director at the Climate Disclosures Standards Board (CDSB), it is a fundamental part of his day-to-day job. He is a Chartered Accountant with an eclectic background covering multiple geographies, having held senior management positions in both industry and charity, covering capital markets, corporate reporting and disclosure for both finance and sustainability. He holds various non-executive roles, demonstrating a global understanding of business, sustainability and driving action towards a global sustainable future where business plays a central role to meeting globally agreed Sustainable Development Goals. CDSB, a big 5 global sustainability standard setter, is closely aligned to IFRS’s Sustainability Standards Board.

Kate Robertson

Kate served as Chairman of the Havas group from 2006 to 2015 and as Global President from 2013. Working mainly in global roles, Kate became convinced of the importance of the roles of global institutions and global businesses in the certainty that what unites people is greater than geographical distance and national distinctions.

Having grown up in apartheid South Africa, Kate’s world view is defined by having witnessed the creation of its new way of life. Awed by the leadership of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Kate believes in the limitless possibilities a sense of shared humanity can create.

Inspired by her love for the Olympic movement and its values, One Young World should, in Kate’s vision, give young leaders a chance to meet their counterparts from every country in the world and resolve to make the world a better place.

Michael Izza

Appointed Chief Executive in 2006, Michael’s leadership has seen ICAEW embrace a vision of building a world of strong and sustainable economies, transforming itself into a professional accountancy body with a truly global identity and reach. In 2018 Michael became Chairman of Chartered Accountants Worldwide.

Michael regularly meets ministers, policy-makers and regulators from around the world, and is a frequent media commentator on economic and business issues. He passionately believes that the wider emerging forces which are already changing the very nature of work – such as climate change and technological disruption – present ICAEW Chartered Accountants with many more opportunities than threats, and is committed to helping the profession meet these challenges.

Michael qualified as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant in 1986 with Coopers & Lybrand after graduating in law from Durham University, where he was also president of the student union. He has served as a school governor for eleven years and is a trustee of several charities, including Moorfields Eye Charity, supporting London’s world class Moorfields Eye Hospital. Prior to joining ICAEW, he spent four years at Spring Group, where he was managing director of several businesses and group finance director.
